Becoming a HVAC Technician

Today’s advancement in technology has reshaped the HVAC industry. The equipment can communicate with the thermostat to alert homeowners of potential concerns, and the system can be included with other home automation services such as door locks, windows or security cameras.

There is a higher demand now for HVAC technicians as these technologies continue to require consistent training and education. HVAC technicians can earn an adequate living, but certification is required to maximize the earning potential. How does someone get started?

The HVAC industry requires education, participation of an apprenticeship program, and successful completion of a state licensing examination to those who service, repair, and perform maintenance on HVAC equipment. Certification is also required for the proper disposal of refrigerants from inside the appliances.

A minimum of six months up to two years of training from an accredited technical school is required to pass the State Exam. Florida also requires proof of work experience such as an apprenticeship program. There are four types of certifications that may be completed dependent on the varying duties the candidate would like to pursue. A seventy-two percentile score is required to pass the exam.

What are the benefits of being a certified or licensed HVAC technician?

Certified, or licensed, HVAC technicians have more privileges and wider opportunities than those who do not have certification. For one, they can be promoted to supervisory positions, service managers, sales or marketing jobs. He or she can also become cost estimators, system test and balance specialists or a building superintendent.
