Why Is My AC Making a Loud Noise? Common Causes

Banging, buzzing, screeching, rattling, each AC noise points to a different problem. Here is how to read them.

Strange noises from your AC

A healthy air conditioner runs with a steady, quiet hum. When new or unusual noises appear, your system is often signaling that something is wrong, and the sound itself can help point to the cause.

What these noises may indicate

Banging or clanking is often a loose or broken internal component, such as a compressor part or an unbalanced fan blade. Buzzing is typically electrical in nature, such as a failing capacitor or contactor. Screeching or squealing may indicate motor bearing failure or a worn belt. Rattling is usually caused by loose hardware, panels, or debris inside the outdoor unit.

When to take it seriously

Some noises require prompt attention. Electrical buzzing, grinding sounds, or any noise coming directly from the compressor should be inspected as soon as possible.

Continuing to run the system in these conditions can turn a minor repair into a major failure. If the noise is loud, persistent, or worsening, turn the system off and schedule a diagnostic visit.
