Before you book a service call
Before scheduling a service visit, a few quick checks can solve a surprising number of HVAC problems.
1–3: Quick indoor checks
Start with the basics inside your home. Check your thermostat — make sure it is set to cool and set below room temperature. It sounds simple, but it is one of the most common issues. Replace your air filter — a dirty filter is the leading cause of weak airflow, poor cooling, and even frozen coils. Check the breaker panel — if your system has tripped a breaker, the unit will not run or cool properly until it is reset.
4–5: Outdoor unit and airflow
Next, take a quick look outside. Inspect the outdoor unit — make sure it is running and free of leaves, grass, or debris blocking airflow. Check your vents — ensure all supply vents inside the home are open and not blocked by furniture, rugs, or other items. Restricted airflow anywhere in the system can reduce performance throughout the entire home.
When to call a professional
If the system is still not cooling, or you notice any of the following, it is time to call a technician: the system runs but no air is blowing or it is blowing warm air only, ice is forming on the indoor or outdoor coil, you hear hissing or unusual refrigerant-related sounds, or breakers keep tripping after being reset. These symptoms often indicate refrigerant issues, electrical faults, or compressor problems that require professional diagnosis and repair.
